It probably doesn’t hurt that Lions Gate is playing up in its marketing that first-time Eli Roth is a protégé of the ever-bizarre David Lynch, which should guarantee a few twists and turns to the plot, as well as some pretty neat gross-out effects. An aggressively unnecessary remake of Eli Roths 2002 original (which rests at a far more palatable 62 on the Tomatometer), Cabin Fever 2.0 simply retells the original, only without the weird. Cabin Fever appears to be yet another in this hallowed tradition, one that harkens back to the Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street model of teens dying one by one, although with the twist of an internal rather than external killer wreaking the havoc. The three healthy members of the party lock the sick one in a shed to prevent further contagion, and as they struggle to find a way to save their friend from a horrible death, they realize that any of them could be next, and must fight not only the impulse to destroy each other to spare themselves, but must also stave off a lynch mob formed by the local populace bent on destroying anyone who suffers from, or has come into contact with anyone who suffers from, the mysterious illness. Their vacation in a remote mountain cabin is soon interrupted when one of the friends becomes ill with some form of virulent, flesh-eating virus.
